In 1982, Kamala Harris enrolled at Howard University, one of the most prestigious historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States. Graduating in 1986, she often credits Howard for instilling in her the confidence and knowledge to pursue a career in public service. At Howard, she served as a representative on the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council, joined the debate team, and became a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
After her undergraduate years, Harris moved to San Francisco to attend the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, now known as the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco.
From 1986 to 1989, she immersed herself in legal studies, earning her Juris Doctor degree. Her time at UC Hastings was marked by active involvement; she served as the president of the Black Law Students Association.
By June 1990, Harris was admitted to the California Bar. Her legal education at UC Hastings provided the foundation for her roles as District Attorney of San Francisco, Attorney General of California, and eventually, U.S. Senator.
